Just the basics
Red light therapy for beginners
What is red light therapy is it safe?
Red light therapy is a non-invasive, light-based treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared (NIR) light to support your body’s natural healing processes. When this light reaches your cells, it helps them produce more energy (ATP), which improves how they function, repair, and regenerate.
It’s not the same as tanning — red light therapy does not produce UV rays, and it will not darken your skin or cause any of the damage associated with sun exposure. It’s completely safe, gentle, and non-thermal.
As of 2025, there are over 8,000 peer-reviewed medical studies validating the benefits of red and near-infrared light therapy for everything from skin health and inflammation to recovery and cellular repair.
Is red light therapy safe to use every day?
Red light therapy is very safe — but like anything beneficial, more isn’t always better. While many people use it daily without issue, we generally recommend starting with sessions every second day, especially when you're just beginning.
Red light therapy is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Your results will depend on your unique biology, your goals, and how much energy (measured in joules) you're delivering per session. For example, short and gentle treatments for the skin can be done more frequently, but high-dose sessions (above 10–20 joules per area) shouldn’t be repeated every day unless you're targeting a specific deep-tissue issue under professional guidance.
It’s important to understand that you don’t need to use red light therapy every day to see benefits. In many cases, less frequent but consistent sessions — or alternating treated areas — will lead to better long-term results. Like any effective therapy, it works best when used with intention, not excess.
What are the most common benefits of red light therapy?
Red light therapy offers a wide range of benefits, both on the surface and deeper within the body. While individual results can vary, many people experience noticeable improvements in skin tone and texture, a visible boost in collagen, and reduced signs of aging. It’s also frequently used to relieve inflammation and chronic pain, especially in joints and muscles.
Athletes often turn to red light therapy for faster muscle recovery, while others report feeling more energized and focused thanks to enhanced cellular function. When used consistently, especially in the evening, it may also support better sleep quality and mood regulation by helping to realign the body’s natural circadian rhythm.
Improved blood circulation, tissue oxygenation, and scalp or hair follicle health are also common outcomes. The real power of red light therapy lies in helping your body do what it’s already built to do — just more efficiently.
how long before I start seeing benefits from red light therapy?
Results vary from person to person, but many people begin noticing subtle improvements within the first 1 to 2 weeks — things like brighter skin, better energy, or faster muscle recovery. For deeper benefits such as reduced inflammation, joint relief, or improved hormonal balance, it may take 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use.
Red light therapy works best when it’s part of a routine. Like nutrition or exercise, it’s not a quick fix — it’s a long-term tool. The key is to stay consistent, track your results, and give your body time to respond. Some changes happen quietly beneath the surface before they become visible on the outside.
How does red light actually work in the body?
Red and near-infrared light work by stimulating the mitochondria — the part of your cells responsible for producing energy. When exposed to the right wavelengths of light, your mitochondria become more efficient at creating ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the fuel your cells use to function.
This extra energy allows your body to perform its natural healing and repair processes more effectively. It can reduce inflammation, speed up recovery, improve circulation, support healthy skin, and even influence mood and sleep. In simple terms, red light helps your body work better by powering it from the inside out.
What's the difference between red and near-infrared light?
Red and near-infrared (NIR) light differ primarily in how deeply they penetrate the body and which tissues they affect.
Red light (around 630–670 nanometers) is absorbed mostly at the surface, where it benefits the skin, blood vessels, and upper tissue layers. It’s ideal for improving skin tone, supporting collagen, and enhancing circulation.
Near-infrared light (around 810–850 nanometers) penetrates much deeper into the body, reaching muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissue. It’s commonly used for recovery, inflammation reduction, and deeper tissue repair.
SECOTRA panels are not designed as a one-size-fits-all solution. Each model is built with a specific purpose in mind, and the panel itself will help guide you to its most effective use. Whether you're focused on skin health, recovery, or systemic benefits, our devices are tailored to deliver the right kind of light in the right way.
How do I get started with red light therapy?
Getting started is simple, but the key is to begin slowly and give your body time to adapt. Red light therapy is safe and non-invasive — it doesn’t use UV rays and isn’t related to tanning — but like any wellness tool, your body responds best with consistency and the right dose.
If you’re new to red light therapy, we recommend starting with short sessions at a greater distance, around three feet from the panel. This lowers the light intensity while still delivering systemic benefits across your body. Most people begin with 5–10 minutes per area, every second day. If you have sensitive skin, you might start with just 2–5 minutes and slowly work your way up.
After a couple of weeks, you can gradually increase your session length or move slightly closer — but there’s no need to rush. Adding 2 minutes per session or decreasing the distance to 2 feet over time is a good way to build a comfortable routine.
Most users find that doing red light therapy every other day works best. For full-body benefits or skin treatments, that schedule allows your cells time to respond without overstimulation. If you're using the panel for targeted recovery or deeper issues, you may adjust your timing and frequency based on how your body responds.
Everyone’s ideal routine is slightly different, and that’s okay. The most important thing is to start consistently and stay patient. With a few weeks of regular use, you’ll begin to understand what works best for you — and the benefits often continue to improve over time.
Product questions
We are here to help. Let's talk about our product
How should I set up my light?
Setting up your red light therapy panel is simple and versatile, designed to fit a variety of spaces while ensuring optimal efficiency.
Most of our lights come equipped with either a kickstand or a hanging kit, giving you flexibility in how you position them. If using the hanging kit, a metal hook allows you to securely mount the panel on a standard door panel inside your home for easy access.
For a wall-mounted setup, we recommend using at least two #10 screws to ensure the hook is securely anchored. Screws should be between 1.5 inches and 2 inches long, depending on whether you are penetrating through drywall. If you're securing the panel to the wall, make sure to use a stud finder to locate a solid anchor point, as mounting into drywall alone won’t provide the necessary strength.
Optimizing Your Panel Placement
Each panel is designed with rubber mounts on the back, allowing you to rest it directly against the wall without damaging surfaces. If you prefer a lower setup, you can attach the hook to the wall just above the panel to prevent it from falling, ensuring added stability while keeping it closer to the ground.
The hanging device is adjustable, allowing for longer extension so that the hook can be installed higher up. This means you can achieve a secure position both on the ground and using the maximum length of the extension, giving flexibility to tailor the setup to your space.
For optimal light efficiency, the panel should be elevated slightly off the ground—ideally 2 to 6 inches. Keeping the panel too close to the floor results in wasted light, whereas raising it within the recommended range minimizes light loss and maximizes benefit.
Alternative Mounting Solutions
Another excellent option is using a television stand rated for at least 88 pounds, which comfortably supports two Simple Two panels. If your setup involves more than two panels, a stand rated between 125 to 150 pounds is recommended for stability.
We are also developing a custom stand tailored for our panels, designed to make mounting even easier. While this product is currently in development, we are happy to help customers find existing stands that work well, which can be purchased through Amazon or other retailers that offer high-quality, heavy-duty TV stands.
By following these guidelines, you can set up your red light therapy panel securely, efficiently, and in a way that maximizes the benefits of your therapy sessions.

Why do we use dual-chip LEDs?
Dual-chip LED technology is a critical upgrade in red light therapy, offering better efficiency, greater cooling, and far more even irradiance compared to traditional single-chip LEDs.
Why Dual-Chip LEDs Matter
One of the biggest challenges with single-chip LEDs is that they dramatically reduce surface area contact between light and skin—cutting it down by more than 50%. This leads to hot spots, uneven distribution of wavelengths, and inconsistent biological effects. Dual-chip LEDs, on the other hand, provide a wider spread of light, ensuring a more effective and evenly distributed treatment.
Additionally, even irradiance is more important than just high irradiance. A panel that delivers uniform coverage ensures every part of the treated area receives the full benefit, rather than concentrating excessive energy on isolated spots. Our dual-chip panels are specifically engineered for optimal light dispersion, eliminating inconsistencies and maximizing efficiency.
A Future Vision for LED Therapy
Ideally, red light therapy would resemble the output of high-performance OLED screens, which use millions of tiny LEDs to provide ultra-even illumination. While this technology isn’t yet available for therapeutic devices, future advancements could bring even greater precision to red light therapy. Until then, our dual-chip approach is the best solution available, creating an optimal balance of performance, efficiency, and even distribution.
Looking ahead, quad-chip LED panels will further push the boundaries of efficiency and irradiance. Our brand is already preparing to integrate quad-chip technology to continue refining light therapy performance for even better biological effects.
Precision Engineering for Maximum Benefit
Our custom LEDs provide high output and superior coverage, ensuring the greatest possible biological benefits with the panel size we’ve carefully designed. We’ve conducted extensive studies to optimize panel size, power output, and efficiency.
Unlike oversized panels with excessive LEDs, our design delivers power beyond most 200-LED panels, closer to the strength of 250- to 300-LED panels. Importantly, using four of our panels together already maxes out a conventional 15-amp outlet at full power. Larger or stronger lights would exceed the power limits of a standard 110V outlet, forcing users to throttle output.
By focusing on pure performance, intelligent engineering, and practical usability, we ensure that users can operate our panels at full capacity without limitations.
Real-World Comparison
In direct comparisons with single-chip LED panels containing more LEDs, our dual-chip technology delivers superior biological effects. Through extensive testing, we’ve confirmed that our LED arrangement provides better irradiance, better light spread, and greater efficiency—all factors that result in a higher-quality therapy experience.
This is why we engineer our panels the way we do—ensuring they deliver maximum benefits, consistent performance, and long-term reliability, without compromise.
What are wavelengths, and why do they matter?
Why Multiple Wavelengths Matter in Red Light Therapy
Red light therapy has gained attention for its ability to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and boost overall wellness. While some devices use only one or two wavelengths of light, incorporating multiple wavelengths is far more beneficial, offering a broader range of therapeutic effects.
What Are Wavelengths of Light?
Light travels in waves, and each wave has a specific length measured in nanometers (nm). Different wavelengths penetrate the skin at varying depths and interact with cells differently. In red light therapy, the most commonly used wavelengths fall into two categories:
Red light (typically 620–700nm) – Reaches surface tissues and enhances skin health, circulation, and collagen production.
Near-infrared light (typically 700–850nm) – Penetrates deeper into the body, stimulating muscle recovery, reducing joint pain, and promoting cellular repair.
The Advantage of a Broader Range of Wavelengths
Using only one or two wavelengths limits the overall therapeutic benefits. By incorporating multiple wavelengths, red light therapy expands into a larger bandwidth, allowing different depths of penetration and synergistic benefits—meaning each wavelength complements and enhances the effects of the others.
For example:
A combination of 630nm, 660nm, and 670nm improves skin health while also supporting tissue healing.
Adding 810nm, 830nm, and 850nm increases deep cellular regeneration and muscle recovery.
Additionally, using a broader range of wavelengths creates a more even and powerful spectral curve, bringing the experience closer to a natural effect rather than a synthetic one. While red light therapy delivers different effects than sunlight itself, having more wavelengths helps reduce artificial limitations and produce a fuller, more fulfilling therapeutic impact.
When multiple wavelengths work together in simultaneous succession, they amplify each other’s effects, increasing the overall synergistic power of red light therapy. This means deeper cellular activation, optimized energy absorption, and greater therapeutic impact across the body.
If you’re considering red light therapy, choosing a device with multiple wavelengths ensures you get the most well-rounded treatment possible—closer to the natural benefits of sunlight while maximizing efficiency and effectiveness.
Why build the simple panel series?
We believe that true innovation comes from engineering smarter, not adding more complexity. High-quality design doesn’t mean cramming in unnecessary features—it means refining and optimizing what truly matters. That’s why we focus on pure light production, whether that means carefully manufacturing high-performance LEDs or delivering the most effective red light therapy experience for you at home.
By prioritizing precision engineering, our panel requires less to produce more. It doesn’t need excessive fans, unnecessary circuits, or extra layers of technology that can interfere with performance. This streamlined approach means greater reliability, lower EMF emissions, and long-term durability without the distractions of WiFi, Bluetooth, apps, or gimmicks.
We designed this panel to be simple yet powerful—something anyone can use, with no complicated setup, no need for constant updates, and no risk of becoming obsolete. Simplicity is key when you want something that just works, and that’s exactly what we deliver: straightforward, high-quality red light therapy built to last and perform.
How do I pair my panels?
On the back of the panel, you will find two headphone jacks. To sync multiple panels and have them run together simultaneously, connect one panel to another using a headphone jack. Simply plug one end into the headphone jack of one panel and the other end into the headphone jack of the second panel. This connection ensures that both panels operate in sync.
Each panel also includes a female port for additional connectivity. You can use a female-to-male connector to link multiple units. We include this connector in packages containing more than one panel, and if you need one, let us know when making a purchase, and we’ll include it for you.
For power setup, you can either plug each panel separately into an outlet or use a multi-adapter suitable for the wattage required. If you are running four Simple 2 panels together, we recommend using the original male cord included, along with a four-port multi-adapter capable of handling 15 amps.
The Simple 2 panel is a high-powered unit, and when four panels are paired together, they utilize nearly the full capacity of a 15-amp breaker on a 110-volt system. Unlike some manufacturers who throttle power output when multiple panels are connected, the Simple 2 panels run at maximum power without any throttling, ensuring consistent and efficient performance.
The Simple Series is a highly power-efficient lighting solution, and we believe you will experience great benefits from its advanced design.
